Empowering Creative Minds
Empowering Creative Minds (ECM) supports creative people who have experienced trauma or displacement, helping them process these experiences through art-based, trauma-informed methods. The project creates a safe space for non-verbal self-expression, dialogue and cultural integration that works across language barriers. Art serves as an instrument for healing and social transformation.
Main goals
- Empower vulnerable and disadvantaged artists to express their own experience through creative practices — without the pressure of having to verbalise their trauma.
- Raise awareness about trauma and its impact on society, and stimulate an open public discussion.
- Launch creative processes that foster dialogue in communities.
- Reduce the stigma associated with mental health issues.
Activities and implementation
In close collaboration with cultural organisations across four countries, training and educational programmes are being developed for artists and professionals. A core element of the project is the development of 12 tested, trauma-informed methodologies — ranging from contemporary dance and visual arts to rhythm exercises. These are integrated into co-creative pilot projects and an online information platform.
Within the project, the following activities are implemented:
- trainings and learning programmes for artists and professionals;
- development of 12 trauma-informed methodologies (including contemporary dance, visual arts and rhythm exercises);
- creation of an online information hub with resources for creative practices;
- co-creation events and local pilot projects that combine art with mental health support;
- an accompanying exhibition in Berlin in July and August 2026, making the project’s results and the power of these approaches accessible to the public.
International cooperation
The project operates in four European countries, fostering transnational cooperation and cultural exchange. This enables artists from different contexts to find a common language and share experience of working through trauma through creativity.
Partner organisations:
- Comparative Research Network (CRN) — Germany;
- Dla Ziemi — Poland;
- Douri — Luxembourg;
- Ukrainian Network of Adult Education and Development of Innovation (UNAEDI) — Ukraine.
Impact
Empowering Creative Minds contributes to:
- strengthening resilience, emotional regulation and connection through shared creative processes;
- creating new cultural narratives that sustainably strengthen communities;
- firmly integrating artistic practices into the fields of mental health and education.
In this way, Empowering Creative Minds is not only an arts project, but also a platform for social change that connects creativity, mental health and cultural integration.
